Invitation to a Journey (2)
Robert Mulholland contrasts his perspective on spiritual formation as a journey with the common notion of spirituality as a static possession, which sees transformation as a result of acquiring information and techniques, discipleship as “my life,” and tends to be defined by actions that ensure its possession.
“When spirituality is viewed as a journey, however, the way to spiritual wholeness is understood as an increasingly faithful response to the One whose purpose shapes our path, whose grace redeems our detours, whose power liberates us from crippling bondages of the prior journey and whose transforming presence meets us at each turn in the road. In other words, holistic spirituality is of pilgrimage of deepening responsiveness to God directing our life and being.” (Invitation to a Journey, 16)
