Thomas Hyland, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor

Mark J. Bair

“I understand what it’s like to struggle with life’s vulnerabilities. It can be heart-breaking when you or a loved one are suffering alone, enduring pain you can’t verbalize. Relationships can be sweet as well as risky and taxing. If you are experiencing shame, grief, conflict, anger, anxiety, trauma, abuse, or addiction, let’s connect.”

“I will provide a safe place for you to be known and suggest tools to move toward healing.”

After serving in the US Navy in Vietnam and thirty-five years in a finance career, Thomas Hyland longed to help more people experience personal healing. This led him to a unique period of “retirement” in his life—receiving his master’s degree in Clinical Counseling at Ashland Seminary.

Tom has been married for over thirty years to Norma, his beautiful and creative partner in marriage. They are the proud parents of two adult children and are thrilled to be new grandparents. Tom is an avid baseball fan, biking enthusiast, and classic film buff.

Tom’s Clinical Focus includes the following areas:

  • Addiction
  • Grief/Loss, Abuse, and Trauma
  • Marriage and Intimacy
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Military Related
  • PTSD
  • Spiritual Issues

“We all need companions who will enter our broken stories and walk with us toward wholeness. During our time together, I aim to be a curious and interactive story companion who offers perspectives to strengthen your sense of freedom and decision-making.

“While I am at times an anxious, angry, and stubborn follower of Christ, God has been patient, merciful, and passionate to know me and offer me freedom.

“I help people process the perplexing emotions of doubt, hurt, and anger experienced in relationships. I know family and friendships are hard— I’ve been attempting to follow God and love people for almost forty-five years. Forgiving, forbearing, waiting.  But God has brought a richness that strengthens my human relationships.”
